When a Side Window Needs Replacing

If your side window is cracked, shattered or will not roll up or down properly, it likely needs to be replaced. Even a small crack can weaken the glass and should be looked at by a professional technician.

Break-Ins and Shattered Door Glass

Most door glass is tempered, so a break-in or a hard knock turns it into thousands of small pieces. Some of that glass falls inside the door, where it can rattle and jam the new window if it is left behind. Before you call, take photos of the damage for your insurer and, after a break-in, for the police report.

Window Off Track or Stuck

A window that drops into the door, tilts or will not close can crack under the strain. If the glass is damaged, replacement brings the window back. Tell us what the window is doing when you ask for a quote, so the technician arrives prepared.

Our Side Window Replacement Process

Door Panel Removal and Glass Cleanup

The technician removes the inside door panel, clears the broken glass out of the door and the cabin, and checks the opening so nothing is left to scratch or jam the new glass.

New Glass Fitted and Tested

The new glass, checked against your VIN before the visit, is fitted to the window mechanism, run up and down, and the door panel goes back on.

30 to 60 Minutes, Drive Right Away

Most side window replacements take about 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the vehicle and the extent of the damage. Unlike a windshield, which needs adhesive cure time, a side window lets you drive the vehicle as soon as the work is done.

Tinted and Privacy Glass

Many SUVs, vans and pickups leave the factory with darker privacy glass behind the front doors. That shade is in the glass itself, and the VIN check is how we match it. Film tint added after purchase is different: it comes off with the broken glass and is not part of the replacement window.

NC Tint Limits (G.S. 20-127)

If you plan to re-tint the new window, North Carolina sets the limits. Side and rear windows must let through at least 35 percent of light, with a meter reading over 32 percent presumed to comply, and reflectance of 20 percent or less. Multipurpose vehicles such as minivans and pickups are exempt behind the driver. Since December 1, 2025, tint is no longer checked at the NC safety inspection, but the limits still apply on the road.

Questions

Questions people ask

Is a side window repair or replacement?

Almost always replacement. Most side glass is tempered and breaks into small pieces, so there is nothing to repair once it cracks or shatters.

How long does a side window replacement take?

Most take about 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the vehicle and the damage, and you can drive right away.

Do you come to me?

Yes. Impex Auto Glass offers mobile service, so our certified technicians can replace your side window at your home, office or wherever your vehicle is.

Is ADAS calibration needed after a side window replacement?

In most cases, no. Calibration is typically needed after a windshield replacement, but our technicians check your vehicle’s safety systems to make sure everything works properly.

Will insurance cover my side window?

Most comprehensive policies cover side window damage. We work directly with all major insurance providers.
