Auto Glass Replacement for Every Window on Your Vehicle

A car has more glass than most drivers think about until one piece breaks. Impex Auto Glass replaces the windshield, the back glass and the door and side windows on cars, SUVs, trucks and fleet vehicles. Our certified technicians work from our drive-in shop in Greensboro and through mobile auto glass service across North and South Carolina: 48 technicians, placed within 40 miles of every town we serve. This page helps you work out which glass you need and what the job involves.

Which Glass Do You Need Replaced?

Windshield

The front glass is laminated, so a stone usually leaves a chip or crack rather than a hole. Small chips (smaller than a quarter) or short cracks out of the driver’s line of sight can usually be repaired. Larger cracks, damage that reaches the edge, or anything that blocks your view usually needs a new one. If the damage affects the glass structure or the safety systems, replacement is the safer choice. Full details are on our windshield replacement page.

Back Glass (Rear Windshield)

Rear glass is tempered and shatters all at once, often from road debris, a temperature swing or a break-in. It cannot be repaired. The job includes clearing the broken glass and reconnecting the defroster; see back glass replacement.

Door and Side Windows

Door glass breaks in break-ins and side impacts, and a window that has come off its track may crack or jam. Our car window replacement page covers door and side glass, tinted privacy glass and how long the job takes.

Tempered vs Laminated Glass

Laminated glass is two sheets bonded to a plastic layer. When it breaks, the layer holds the pieces together, which is why windshields crack instead of shattering and why a chip can be filled. Tempered glass is a single sheet heat-treated to be stronger. When it fails, it breaks into small, blunt pieces, which is safer for the people inside but means it cannot be repaired. Most side and rear glass is tempered, although some newer cars use laminated side glass for quiet and security. North Carolina law (G.S. 20-135) requires safety glass wherever glass is used in a car’s doors, windows and windshield.

Getting the Right Part the First Time

VIN-Based Part Check

We check every part against your vehicle identification number before we schedule. Two cars of the same model and year can need different glass, and the VIN tells the supplier which one your car left the factory with.

Heated, Antenna and Sensor Options

Glass can carry heating wires, a radio antenna, a rain sensor, a camera bracket or a head-up display zone. OEM glass matches your vehicle’s original specifications and usually gives the closest fit and performance. Aftermarket glass can cost less but may vary slightly in thickness, clarity or sensor compatibility. For vehicles with ADAS or other advanced systems, OEM or high-quality OEE (original equipment equivalent) glass is often recommended. When a new windshield needs the camera aimed again, we handle ADAS camera calibration as part of the job.

How Long Each Job Takes

A typical windshield replacement takes between 30 minutes and 2 hours. Standard vehicles often take about 45 to 60 minutes, while models with sensors, heating elements or complex designs can take longer, and more time may be needed for the adhesive to cure and for calibration. Many installations need 30 to 60 minutes before the car is safe to drive, but in some cases waiting several hours or up to 24 hours is recommended. Always confirm the safe drive-away time with your technician.

Cleanup After Broken Glass

Tempered glass leaves small pieces in the seats, the door, the cargo area and the carpet. Our technicians make a clean removal part of the job, so the new glass goes into a clean opening and you are not finding pieces for weeks. Until we arrive, avoid running the window or the defroster on a broken pane, and keep children and pets away from the loose glass.

Insurance and Payment

Most comprehensive auto insurance policies cover glass repair or replacement. Some plans include full glass coverage, meaning you pay no deductible. Coverage terms depend on your provider and policy, so confirm whether your damage is covered and whether there are shop or repair requirements. We work with all major insurance providers, and if you pay yourself, the quote is all-inclusive. Our insurance claims guide explains the process in North and South Carolina.
