Behind the badge in your grille or a smooth panel in the front bumper, many cars carry a radar sensor that measures the distance and speed of the vehicle ahead. It keeps adaptive cruise at a safe gap and lets the car warn you, or brake, before a collision. If that sensor points even slightly off, it can watch the wrong lane. Impex Auto Glass performs ADAS radar calibration on site, so the radar points where the carmaker intended.

What Front Radar Does
According to I-CAR, the collision repair training body, forward radar sensors sit in or behind the front bumper or grille. They send out radio waves and read what comes back, which works in rain and darkness when a camera struggles.
Adaptive Cruise Control
Adaptive cruise holds the speed you set but slows down to keep a gap behind slower traffic, then speeds back up when the lane clears. The radar supplies the distance and closing speed.
Forward Collision Warning and Braking
Forward collision warning alerts you when you close on a vehicle too fast, and automatic emergency braking applies the brakes if you do not react. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that warning plus automatic braking cut rear-end crashes in half.
When Radar Needs Calibration
When a windshield or front-end component is replaced or repaired, radar units can shift slightly, so precise calibration matters for accurate system performance. I-CAR says calibration is normally required after the radar itself is replaced and may be required after other work at the front of the car.
After Bumper or Grille Repair
Taking off the bumper cover or grille to repair or repaint it means unbolting the radar or its bracket. Even a perfect repair can leave the sensor at a slightly different angle.
After a Wheel Alignment or Suspension Work
Driver-assist sensors aim along the line the car drives. Each carmaker sets its own list of events that call for calibration, and for some vehicles a wheel alignment is on that list. We follow the procedure for your vehicle.
After a Minor Front-End Hit
A parking bump or a deer strike that leaves only a scuff can still move a sensor mount or bracket. I-CAR lists front structural repair among the events that may call for radar calibration. If adaptive cruise or collision warning starts acting up after a knock, have the radar checked.

How We Calibrate Radar
We perform ADAS radar calibration on site using advanced diagnostic and alignment technology. Our certified technicians follow manufacturer-specific procedures to make sure your radar sensors are positioned correctly and communicating properly with your vehicle’s safety systems. Static radar calibration uses a target, generally metal and pyramid shaped, set in a large area clear of other metal objects. Because we complete calibration immediately after service, you do not need a separate dealership appointment.
Radar vs Camera Calibration
The two are separate jobs. The camera sits at the top of the windshield and usually needs calibrating after a new windshield; see ADAS camera calibration. The radar sits in the front bumper or grille and usually needs calibrating after work at the front of the car. Some vehicles use both for adaptive cruise and braking, and some need both calibrated after the same repair. Our services page lists every job we do.

Questions
Questions people ask
Do I need radar calibration after a windshield?
Usually not. Most front radar sits in the bumper or grille, so a new windshield normally calls for camera calibration instead. Radar can need attention when front-end parts are replaced or repaired.
How long does it take?
It depends on the vehicle and the carmaker’s procedure. We give you the time with your quote.
Is it covered by insurance?
That depends on your policy and on the repair the calibration follows, so check with your insurer. We work with all major insurance providers to keep the process simple.
Do I need a dealership for radar calibration?
No. We complete calibration immediately after service, without the need for a separate dealership appointment.
